Energos - Indra

Role: UX Researcher + IA + Interaction Designer

Energos was an industrial research project in collaboration with Indra Solutions company. The goal of this project is the use of technology for automated and intelligent management of SmartGrid.

Tasks included in the project: conceptualise, research, benchmark, user interviews, focus group, task analysis, heuristics evaluation, data analysis. brainstorming, requirements specification, information architecture definition, prototyping

Project description

Problem

The goal of Energos project was the development of future-oriented human-supervisory control tools for the smart grid. The main challenge of this project was to design a product to be deployed in a curved screen whose dimensions are quite different from a common screen.

Research

The starting point in this project was the review of control procedures, documentation for the operating electric grid, and the review of existing conrol systems. But, envisioning tools for future-oriented human-supervisory control tools is almost imposible withouth expert's knowledge. Focus groups with domain experts were developed to get experts perceptions, opinions, beliefs, and attitudes towards the future tool.

Data analysis and information architecture definition

Analysing the context allowed to define the organization squeme for the tool. The more suitable way was an organization based on the main tasks of an operator.

Design

The final design of the user interface is divided into three different areas including a monitoring area in order to allow human operators making sense of the current state of the grid infrastructure, a control area to support lower-level actions, and a communication area to support sync and async communications among operators.
